Discovering the Hidden Kingdom: A Journey Through Bhutan

Bhutan, tucked away in the Eastern Himalayas, is an experience rather than merely a place to visit. A tiny country known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” it is well-known for its old monasteries, unspoiled natural beauty, and Gross National Happiness-based way of life. Here is a sneak peek into my amazing journey through this enchanted region, which I recently had the chance to discover.

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – First Glimpse of Serenity

Arriving in Paro by plane is a unique experience. There are breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and verdant valleys as you descend into the Alps. I was immediately struck by the serene flow of life once I was on the ground.
Despite the absence of traffic lights throughout the entire nation, everything appears to move in sync.

Day 2: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

The highlight of any trip to Bhutan is the Taktsang Monastery, popularly known as Tiger’s Nest, which we visited early the next morning. The monastery is a spiritual and physical climb, perched on a cliff 3,000 feet above the valley. Although difficult, the hike was incredibly fulfilling. Blessings were sent around the valley as prayer flags floated in the wind.

The view was stunning from the summit. The scene seemed otherworldly because of the silence, which was only broken by distant chanting and the sound of the wind.

Day 3-4: Thimphu – The Heart of Bhutan

It is a unique experience to fly into Paro. As you go down into the Alps, you can see stunning views of snow-capped peaks and lush valleys. Once I arrived on the ground, I was instantly impressed by the calm flow of life.
Everything seems to move in unison, even though there are no traffic lights anywhere in the country.

We then traveled to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. It is a unique blend of modern and traditional. You will witness young people in jeans walking beside monks in crimson robes, and you will see glass-fronted stores close to ancient temples.

Here were a few highlights:

• The Tashichho Dzong is the seat of the Bhutanese government.
• The massive golden statue known as the Great Buddha Dordenma towers over the city.
• When we visited the Textile Museum and School of Traditional Arts, we saw Bhutanese artisans maintaining age-old traditions.

Day 5: Punakha – Valley of Bliss

As we reached the Dochula Pass, we were greeted by 108 chortens (stupas) built in honor of Bhutanese troops and vast views of the Himalayas. As we descended into the Punakha Valley, the temperature increased and the landscape spread out into lush rice fields.

We went to the beautiful Punakha Dzong, which is located where two rivers converge. With good reason, it is frequently referred to as Bhutan’s most magnificent dzong. We also had the exciting pleasure of walking across the nation’s longest suspension bridge!

Day 6-7: Back to Paro and Departure

We returned to Paro for a relaxed final day. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect, sip Bhutanese butter tea, and buy handicrafts like handmade textiles, prayer wheels, and scarves made of yak wool.

I realized that experiencing Bhutan is just as important as seeing it as I was getting on the plane to go home. It is as much an internal journey as an external one. In a world rushing toward modernity, Bhutan is a sanctuary of peace, harmony, and mindfulness.

Travel Tips for Bhutan

• Visa: All visitors must book through a certified Bhutanese travel operator and have a valid visa, with the exception of those from Bangladesh, India, and the Maldives.
• March through May and September through November are the best times to go because of the nice weather and exciting festivals.
• Ngultrum (BTN) is the currency used; the Indian Rupee is also commonly used.
• What to Bring: Comfortable hiking shoes, layers for the unpredictable mountain weather, and modest temple attire.
