Permits for Everest Base Camp Trek

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Everest/Sagarmatha National Park is home to Mount Everest and is well-known for its deep valleys, towering mountain peaks, glaciers, and Sherpa communities.

Thousands of hikers, ecotourists, and explorers visit this area each year to take in the breathtaking scenery. The majority arrive at Everest Base Camp (EBC). However, in order to enter Everest Base Camp, you will need both a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and a Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit.

1. Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit

For the first four weeks, foreign nationals, including citizens of SAARC (India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Pakistan), can obtain a Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit by paying NPR 3,000 per person.

The permit costs Rs. 3,000 per person after four weeks (VAT not included). To obtain this authorization, you must have your passport on you.

Where can I get a permit from the Khumbu Rural Municipality?

You will need to obtain this permit after you get to Lukla if you are traveling there by air. This permit is available in Monjo at the Sagarmatha National Park Counter for trekkers traveling to the Khumbu region from Jiri or Salleri.

Where can I get an entrance permit for the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality in Lukla?

This permit is issuing office is located on your Lukla hiking pathways. The location is not a concern for you.

2. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

To visit Sagarmatha National Park, foreigners must pay NPR 3,000 per person. However, the entrance price is NPR 100 for Nepalis and NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals, with an additional 13% VAT. Children under the age of ten are admitted free of charge. To obtain this authorization, your passport is required.

Where can I get the Sagarmatha National Park Permit?

This permit is available from the Nepal Tourism Board Office, located at Pradarshani Marg, Kathmandu 44617. Their website can be found here: https://ntb.gov.np/.

This permit is also available at Monjo’s Sagarmatha National Park Entry Gate. However, you may have to wait in line for a lengthy time during the busiest trekking seasons. Therefore, it is recommended that you obtain this permit in Kathmandu as soon as possible.
