The capital of Dhanusha district is Janakpur, which bears King Janak’s name. The distance between it and Kathmandu is 380 kilometers. In honor of Janaki (Goddess Sita), Queen Maharani Brishabhanu Kunwari Devi of Tikamgarh, India, constructed the majestic Janaki Mandir in 1811 A.D. Every year on Vivah Panchami day, which falls in December, Janakpur solemnizes the anniversary of Lord Rama and Sita’s marriage. Hundreds of thousands of devotees from India and Nepal attend this, one of the region’s largest celebrations. Near Janakpur town lies a location called Dhanusha Dham, which has a connection to the famous Hindu epic Ramayana.
