After breakfast, explore Thimphu. See Trashichhoedzong, the stunning medieval monastery/fortress that houses the King’s Throne room and the most of the government’s offices. Day 3: Thimphu/ Punakha (75 Km, 3 Hours)

Drive to Punakha after breakfast, making a quick stop at Dochulapass (3,080m) to enjoy the scenery and the prayer flags, mani wall, and chorten that adorn the road’s highest point. The following peaks are visible from this pass (left to right) when the skies are clear: The table mountains that dominate the remote area of Lunana are Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m), Jejegangphugang (7,158m), Kangphugang (7,170m), Zongphugang (7,060m), and Gangkarpuensum, Bhutan’s highest peak at 7,497m.

Later, visit Punakha Dzong, which Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal deliberately constructed in 1637 at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers to serve as the region’s administrative and religious hub. Punakha Dzong has been a significant part of Bhutan’s history. The Dzong has been completely repaired after suffering damage from an earthquake and four devastating fires.

After breakfast, take a drive to Paro, stopping along the way to see Simtokha Dzong, the Kingdom’s oldest fortification, which was constructed in 1627 and is currently home to the School for Religious Studies.
