Trip Overview
Located at 3,710 meters (12,172 feet) above sea level at the foot of the Thorong La mountain pass in Mustang province, Muktinath is an important site for both Buddhists and Hindus.
The Sanskrit terms “Mukti,” which means “Salvation or Nirvana,” and “Nath,” which means “God or Master,” are the origin of the name Muktinath.Similarly, the pagoda-style Muktinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Bishnu. Along with being one of the eight sacred locations known as Svayam Vyakta Kshetras (the other seven being Srirangam, Srimushnam, Tirupati, Naimisharanya, Totadri, Pushkar, and Badrinath), it is also considered to be one of the 108 Vaishnava temples.
The pilgrimage to Muktinath is also known as a religious excursion. Every year, pilgrims come to take a plunge in the pools beneath the 108 rushing waterfalls, regardless of the weather. Similarly, it is believed that bathing in these two ponds (Kunda) and 108 water spigots will save you.
