Finally, the most important day of our ABC short trek is here which marks each of our footprints at a new milestone of ABC. The higher we go, the thinner the air so we will breathe deeply and walk slowly to let our body gradually adapt to the altitude.

From Deurali, the trail keeps going up, and after we get through Bagar Village, we will cross a tiny yet charming Himalayan stream and walk up the vertical stone steps to arrive at Machhapuchare Base Camp (MBC) at 3700 m.

We will have lunch at MBC located below one of the holy peaks that is ranked among the most beautiful peaks in the world. A short lunch break will give us the majestic and unique perspective of the south face of Annapurna along with Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, and Gandharvachuli.

After the break, we will walk over one more stream and traverse the grassy and rocky area for around 3 hours. Here we are, the ABC milestone where we will take the souvenir photos with Tarke Kang, Annapurna III, Machhapuchhare, Singu Chuli, Khangsha Kang, Annapurna I, Varaha Shikhar, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna South.

We will celebrate, share our joy, and stay overnight at ABC which will be no doubt a memorable night for all of us when sleeping at above 4000 m altitude.

Trip Info
The Most Appropriate for ABC short trek

Although our short Annapurna base camp trek is possible in every four seasons of Nepal, the best window however will be the autumn running between September and November, and spring running between March and May. The weather during these seasons is particularly consistent, warm, and dry, creating a fantastic time for hikers to enjoy stunning mountain views.

Spring brings warm sunshine and vibrant rhododendron forests bursting with red, white, and pink blooms. Meanwhile, autumn offers a very transparent blue and clear sky with mesmerizingly beautiful views of the snow-topped peaks. But be mindful that these are also the peak time in Nepal Himalayas so you may have to deal with the heavy crowd on the trail.

If you like to trek in the off-season times of monsoon and winter, then you have to be ready for the tougher weather. You can trek during the monsoon months of June, July, and August, but you will have to tackle the muddy trails, cloudy skies, heavy rain, and limited mountain visibility.

In winter, between December through February, trekking becomes quite challenging due to snow and freezing temperatures at base camps.

Annapurna base camp trek 10 days journey: Level of Difficulty

The 5 days Annapurna base camp trek is rated as a B-class hike which means it has a moderate difficulty level. This journey is therefore perfect for anyone who has decent shape even if you have never trekked before. However, it is always a wise step to know about the short Annapurna base camp trek challenges and mentally get ready for the adventure. So as long as you dare, anyone can take on this journey.

The ABC short trek spans about 110 km distance with a steady climb which makes it fairly manageable for everyone. However, some parts of the trail can be steep, and you will need to cross some shaky and old suspension bridges which can be a bit tough. The maximum elevation of the entire journey is 4130 m which is comparatively a moderate altitude in the Himalayas. In addition, the Travel Time of the trip is only ten days with six days of hiking.

You will usually be walking around six hours a day to get to your overnight stops. Plus, the trek is fully supported by lodges which makes it a great option for those who try to soak their feet in the mountain trekking. All in all, our short Annapurna base camp trek is all about the impactful experience of the Himalayas, charming villages, and ancient forests.

Can new hikers take part in our Annapurna base camp trek 10 days Adventure?

Yes, even if you are not familiar with high-altitude trekking, you can totally take part in our short Annapurna base camp trek. The trail to ABC has been set up nicely with good infrastructure. The track also does not require any special skills to navigate. However, you do have to keep in mind that as you move along, you will go deeper into the wilderness and may also encounter steep cliffs and a dry mountain setting.

Therefore, you need to be physically and mentally tough to face the challenges ahead. If you think you can deal with the long walks each day and keep yourself in good shape with a strong drive, then this trek is perfectly doable for you. So no matter, whether you are a lone traveler, exploring with friends, or have young children with you or you are just a retiree, we will be thrilled to take you along on our ABC short trek.

However, if you are expecting, or have any serious health problems, especially related to your heart or lungs, please talk to your doctor before joining us.

Threat of AMS/Altitude Sickness in short Annapurna base camp trek

Altitude sickness is very uncommon in our 10 days Annapurna base camp trek as the maximum elevation you will attain is only 4130 m at the Annapurna Base Camp. You will ascend to above 3000 m only on day 4 when you trek from Chomrong to Deurali, after which you will surpass the 4,000 m mark the next day when making your way to ABC. At ABC, you will spend one night at the adjacent lodge and the following day, you will again descend to Bamboo Village at 2310 m. So it means, that only two days of the ABC short trek will be a bit demanding for you with the possibility of developing Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

It is because of the thin air of Deurali and ABC that you may show milder signs of altitude sickness. Such as nausea, mild headaches, difficulty in breathing, and a loss of appetite. In such incidents, you should either walk down to the lower village or you may choose to remain in your current location and rest adequately depending on how our guide will decide appropriate for you. If you like to have additional assistance in acclimatizing to the high altitudes, Diamox medicine can be a great option for you provided you don’t have any contraindications against the usage of the drug.

To better yet prevent the AMS, you should move very slowly and prepare your body in advance by achieving the necessary fitness levels. Throughout the trek, you should also keep hydrated by consuming approximately three liters of water daily. You should also limit your intake of alcohol, food, and cigarettes to enhance your body’s ability to cope with the elevation.

Preparation and Training for the short Annapurna base camp trek
Our short Annapurna Base Camp Trek can be easy for those who are very well-prepared and at the same time, it can be tough for those who do not prepare themselves adequately. For this trek, you really need to be both physically and mentally ready before you hit the trail. Here’s what you need to focus on to prepare for the trek:

Cardiovascular fitness: You should be able to handle the altitude and steep trails, so focus on cardio workouts like running, cycling, or swimming to boost your endurance.
Leg strength: Since you will be climbing and descending a lot, strength training for your legs is very important. Exercises like squats, lunges, and leg presses will help you build that strength.
Flexibility: Staying flexible can help you avoid injuries and make those long hikes more manageable. Try adding yoga or Pilates to your routine for better flexibility.
Mental resilience: The trek can be tough on your mind, so it is essential to develop mental endurance. Mindfulness practices, meditation, and visualization can really help with this.
Short Hikes: It will also be a good idea to do some shorter treks first to get used to the altitude and build your stamina.

Diverse Approaches to ABC Short Trek

There are plenty of different routes available that you can take to get to Annapurna Base Camp, which means you can combine several trails into one amazing adventure of a short Annapurna base camp trek. You can easily pair our 10 days Annapurna base camp trek with hikes to Poon Hill and Ghorepani. Or, you can also choose to explore the northern Annapurna Base Camp where you will walk along some off-the-beaten-path trails and villages like Ghasa, Lete, and Thulo Bugin which may be very new to you.

In addition, you can also enjoy camping in these lovely little villages. To make your trip even more epic, you can also add experiences like the Khopra Ridge trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, or Mardi Himal trek with your ABC short trek journey.

Accommodation and Dining

Your accommodation in both cities will include a twin-sharing room equipped with an en suite bathroom and hot shower, along with 24-hour access to Wi-Fi.

During the trek, standard lodges in the overnight villages will be your resting places. Because the Annapurna region has developed in recent years due to its popularity, you may also enjoy the amenities of private bathrooms, hot water, and Wi-Fi.

However, please understand that such lodges may not always be available, so you may have to compromise with shared toilet facilities. In these lodges, you will share a room with fellow travelers of the same gender.

As for meals, you will get breakfast every morning in Pokhara, while lunches and dinners will be self-catered. During the trek, you will be served main courses for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Additionally, we will also coordinate all your flights between Pokhara. For local ground transportation, a car or jeep will facilitate your transfer from Pokhara to Siwai and from Naya Pul back to Pokhara.

Essential Permits for ABC Short Trek

For the short Annapurna base camp trek. We will need to have two very mandatory permits on our hands: the TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) and the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) permits. The TIMS permit requires the cost of NPR 2000 per trekker and helps manage trekkers on any route in Nepal during emergencies. On the other hand, the ACAP permit needs the cost of NPR 3000 per trekker which gives you access to the Annapurna region’s restricted areas.

We will take care of all the fees and the application process for you.

5 days Annapurna base camp trek Vs. 14 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Both the 5-day and 14-day travel programs will ultimately take you to ABC. The major attractions in both treks include the Machhapuchhre Base Camp, located at an altitude of 3,700 meters, which provides magnificent views of Machhapuchhre Peak, also known as Fish Tail. Another main attraction is the ABC itself where you will be surrounded by impressive glaciers and the towering Annapurna range, while the hot springs of Jhinu Danda are yet another highlight where you can regenerate after a long journey.

There are also many more attractions in both the travel program such as the exploration of Pokhara, along with the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Annapurna region. However, the main difference between the two programs is the number of hiking days. The Annapurna base camp trek 5 days program omits the trek to Ghorepani and Poon Hill to shorten the hiking Travel Time so it is suitable for those who are pressed for time.

On the other hand, the 14-day program extends the hiking days by including the trek to Ghorepani and Poon Hill, which is an exceptional viewpoint for witnessing the sunrise over the magnificent Himalayas. Thus, if you can spare an extra four days, the longer program would be preferable.

Travel Insurance

The short Annapurna base camp trek is a very captivating and motivating journey that mixes gentleness as well as some steeply challenging paths. Because of this, there is also a risk of accidents, which could lead to some significant medical costs.

You may face anything from a few bruises to serious injuries that may need urgent help. If you have insurance that covers medical care or emergency evacuations, you can enjoy your hike without worry. That’s why it’s a good idea that you opt for comprehensive mountain travel insurance for your ABC short trek, as it provides more extensive coverage.

Typically, your insurance policy should include medical bills, protection against unexpected health problems, lost luggage, rescue services, and compensation for canceled trips or flights. Additionally, remember that you need travel insurance to get the necessary permits for our trip. When you make your booking, please send us a copy of your policy as well.
