The Annapurna trek via Poon Hill trail is a 14 day journey that includes ten-day trek that will take you through some of the most famous landmarks of Annapurna such as 3210 m high Poon Hill Observation Deck, 3700 m high Machhapuchare (Fishtail) base camp (MBC), the natural thermal healing spring of Jhinu Danda, and the queen city of Annapurna – the Pokhara.
It is also sometimes referred to as the Coca Cola Trek which winds up and down a series of valleys and slopes, making the trek a little more strenuous. But in return you will be surrounded by the breathtaking beauties of Gangapurna (7455 m), Annapurna I (8091 m), Tarke Kang (7202 m), Hiunchuli (6441 m), Machhapuchhare (6993 m), Khangsha Kang (7485 m), Annapurna III (7555 m), Varaha Shikhar (7647 m), Singu Chuli (6501 m), and Annapurna South (7219 m). Located in the northern corner of Nepal inside the much-protected Annapurna Conservation Area, the Annapurna Base Camp saw the first human imprints of Don Whillans, Chris Bonnington, and Dougal Haston in the year 1970. Following their path, we will also approach the southern base camp of Annapurna and begin our Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill journey with a drive from the capital to Pokhara. Then walking beside the calm waters of the Modi and Bhurungdi Rivers, we pass through the Magar, Thakali, and Gurung settlements to reach the serene natural playground of the Himalayas- the Poon Hill.
After watching the dawn over Machhapuchre, Tukuche, Annapurna II, III, and IV, Hiunchuli, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal, Varaha Shikhar, and Manaslu, we once again head through the few Gurung settlements and make all the way to the foot of the sacred mountain of Machhapuchare. Now, our ABC trek via Poon Hill will transition us to the delightful ABC- the pleasant Annapurna Sanctuary where time seems to slow down by the imposing rock and giant walls of the Annapurna ranges.
Now, circling back the same route, we will take some moments to regenerate at Jhinu Danda and return back to Kathmandu via Pokhara. All in all, our Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill will not only take you to the most beautiful trekking route in Nepal but also to the TOP 10 most beautiful mountain climbing routes in the world.

Trip Information
Right Time Frame for Annapurna trek via Poon Hill
The Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill is possible all year round, so you can enjoy it in any four seasons of Nepal. However, if you are a novice hiker, then heading to Annapurna Base Camp during the winter times of December, January, and February may not be a good idea. The Himalayan area of the Annapurna often receives harsher weather conditions during this time with deeper snow at the base camp which can be tough for the beginner trekker. But if you have already done winter hikes before and are well prepared with the right equipment, then you can enjoyably hike to ABC even in winter.
Likewise, the summer/monsoon period extending between June through August also has its own beauty but it is the least recommended time among the four seasons. It is because Pokhara and Annapurna regions receive the most rainfall across the country resulting in landslides, bad weather, slippery roads, reduced visibility, and rainy days that can delay your trips, and mess up your walking journey.
Therefore, the most favorable time for both the novice and the experienced hiker for the Annapurna trek via Poon Hill will be the months of autumn (September through November) and spring (March through May).
These are the two most popular seasons for hiking due to the mild, pleasant weather and stunning natural scenery. Spring brings flowers in full bloom, bringing a vivid picture of nature, while autumn brings fresh, dry air and great views of the majestic mountain ranges. Less rainfall and a stable climate also make it easy for tourists to participate in any outdoor activities and trekking.
Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill: Challenges and Level of Dfficulty
If you think you can are capable of taking up the moderately tough trekking adventure in Nepal, then the Annapurna trek via Poon Hill is calling your name. This exciting journey is fit for all mountain lovers who are reasonably fit, and you don’t need any previous experience in hiking in high-elevated regions.
However, you have to understand that it is still a Himalayan journey where altitude can be a big challenge. You will have daily elevation changes that sometimes may drop to 2500 m or sometimes rise above 3000 m.
In addition, the terrain of the Annapurna region will also demand some hardships from you. Definitely, the trails are marked and signposted and the trail doesn’t require technical climbing, but you will certainly have to tackle some sharp inclines and descents. For example, there are 3300 vertical stone steps to Ulleri and ascension to 3090 m high Deurali Danda. Also, the Poon Hill trek will also take you 3200 m elevation.
Therefore staying healthy and fit is essential to tackle these challenges. To minimize these setbacks, our team has put together an Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill itinerary such that it will allow you enough and proper time for adaptation.
You won’t be walking for long and you will also have the company of our expert guide who will take you through the easiest routes and navigate tougher spots. Plus, we also offer you porters to carry your bags, so you can enjoy the trek without the burden of heavy luggage and there is also no absolute need for camping even at ABC.

And if you are scared of heights, you should think it over but we advise you not to let your fear hold you back from experiencing this incredible Himalayan trek.
Possibility of AMS/Acute Mountain Sickness in our ABC trek via Poon Hill
Altitude sickness or AMS is the real concern in our Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill itinerary. Even though the maximum point in our trek is just 4130 m at the base camp itself, still, the varying altitudes along the way can trigger the symptoms of AMS.
Most common occurrences include dizziness, headache, nausea, exhaustion, sleep disturbances, swollen hands and feet, and loss of interest in appetite.
Additionally, things like climbing too quickly, drinking alcohol, and not staying hydrated can make it worse. Our Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill itinerary includes a slow ascent to help everyone acclimatize, but altitude sickness can still be unpredictable.
If you do start feeling unwell and start to show the aforementioned signs, you can consider taking Diamox or aspirin, or Ibuprofen for mild symptoms. Diamox also helps you rapidly adapt to the Annapurna air. However, the best way to prevent and fight AMS is to stay hydrated with plenty of water, enjoy some garlic soup, ginger tea, or lemon honey tea, and take your time when it comes to the climbing part of the journey. Also, you should let our guide know about your condition right away. He will check on your condition and based on that, he may delay your trip for a day or two or take you to a lower area until you are fully adjusted.
Training and Preparation for the Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill
Yes, certainly the Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill is a moderate and very enjoyable journey but still, it will take you to over 4000 m altitude in between the Himalayas. Therefore, it is a good idea that you begin preparing and training at least two months ahead of your trip time. The adequate and accurate training will enable you to enjoy your journey without worrying about the AMS and fatigue.
If you are already active and love fitness, then this amazing trek will be pretty doable for you. But if you are someone who just sits at a desk behind computers for a long time, then it’s time that you begin preparing with some light walking for about half an hour in the park. Gradually, you can increase your exercise to one or two hours. As you build your stamina, you can also add swimming, running, squats, and cycling to your workouts.
On the other hand, yoga will also help you physically and mentally prepare for the journey. The main thing is you should boost your heart health, muscle strength, and overall endurance for this journey.
Various Path to ABC trek via Poon Hill
The ARM (Annapurna Rural Municipality) searched a new route leading to the northern ABC back in 2019. since then, the new trail has drawn the attention of numerous travel companies and trekkers alike. This path was first explored by a French Team led by Louis Lachenal and Maurice Herzog in 1950. Thus, the trail is also nicknamed as Maurice Herzog Trail. However, it is not as famous as its southern counterpart so the nature here still remains intact with its raw beauty. If you decide to take this route, your journey will commence from Pokhara from where you will travel through the unique settlements of Ghasa, Lete, and Thulo Bugin, where you will need to camp overnight.
After that, you will head to overcome 4400 m Thulo Bugin Pass and head to 4130 m Miristi Khola. Finally, you will find yourself at the northern Annapurna Base Camp. On the other hand, you can also think about adding some amazing experiences like the Annapurna Circuit, Khopra Ridge, or Mardi Himal trek to your already set Annapurna base camp trek via Poon Hill itinerary.
