Trip Introduction of Chulu West Peak Climbing

Short Overview

Your climb of Chulu West Peak will surely make you proud. The Chulu West is located on a mountain ridge between Labse Khola and the Damodar Himal, north of the Annapurna range, at an elevation of 6419 meters above sea level. Even though it is considered the trekking peak, you have to be quite athletic and well-prepared to reach such a high altitude. However, the emotions you will experience when ascending Chulu West Peak are well worth it.

Views of Dhaulagiri, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Manaslu, and the Annapurna range are stunning from the peak’s summit. In addition to the thrill of climbing the 6000-meter-high mountain, the Chulu West peak climbing path offers breathtaking scenery and cultural diversity as you go closer to the Tibetan border.

On our journey to the peak, a portion of the well-known Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal travels through the Marshyangdi Valley. Sections of the newly built road or gravel track alternate with the existing hiking paths that go to Manang’s main town. You pass Buddhist cultural elements such as mani walls, shrines, and prayer wheels.

Before traveling to the hamlet of Ledar, you make a brief detour to the historic village of Manang. At last, you depart from the main road and ascend sharply to the base camp beneath Chulu West. After reaching the top, we descend the 5,416-meter Thorong La Pass, which leads to Jomsom and the well-known pilgrimage site Muktinath. You then take a plane to Pokhara and return to Kathmandu via car.

In order to ensure that you are well acclimated to the altitude before attempting the summit, our Chulu West Peak climbing program includes an acclimatization hike. You can reach the top if you are skilled at walking at high elevations and know how to use the climbing equipment.

The best months to climb Chulu West Peak are March, April, September, October, and November.

How does our adventure start?

Our Chulu West Peak climbing program starts with a drive to Syanje after you get to Kathmandu. Our journey towards the towns of Dharapani, Upper Pisang, Manang, and Ledar begins the next day.

We begin our journey to the summit from Ledar by hiking to the Chulu West base camp and High Camp. We start attacking the top early the following day.

After reaching the summit, we will spend the next few days traveling primarily downhill to Muktinath, Jomsom, and Pokhara before returning to Kathmandu.

The charming village of Ghunsnag will then greet us with its cozy tea house and captivating views of the mountains. We will take a short break here to eat lunch. After that, we cross a little bridge over a stream to get to Yak Kharka, which is well-known for its vast grasslands where sheep and yaks can graze.

Day 10: Trek To Base Camp (4910m) from Ledar Duration 4-5 hours

We will arrive at Chulu West Peak’s base camp today. We must climb, of course, but it will not be particularly challenging or tricky. Today, we will ascend approximately 700 meters and breathe in the base camp’s thin air. Therefore, we shall take a very slow and steady approach to this. We must move on the rough glacier terrain with firm footing and careful attention, so please do not rush.

We will arrive at the base camp, where we may take in the magnificent view of the massive Annapurna range, in roughly four to five hours. In addition to preparing delicious meals for us, our crew will put up the tents.

Our climbing guide will teach us how to use jumar, ice axes, and crampons in the interim. Additionally, he will teach us how to use ropes to climb and descend.

Day 11: Trek To High Camp (5590m) from Base Camp Duration 4-5 hours

We have reached a height of over 5,000 meters today. Ice axes, ropes, crampons, and trekking poles may be necessary for the uphill trekking due to the rocky and glacial terrain. To make it easier for us to cross the steep areas, our guide will secure the rope.

The first camp, known as Camp I, will be encountered along the route at an elevation of 5100 meters. Some climbers remain here to acclimate, planning to ascend to High Camp or reach the summit of Chulu West the following day.

However, since it will be quite easy to climb the peak from here, we will move on to Camp II or High Camp.

After arriving at the High Camp and erecting the tents, we will eat and then rehearse utilizing our climbing gear to boost our confidence.

Day 12: Climb to Chulu west summit(6419m) and return to high camp or Ledar Duration 9-10 hours

We will target the Chulu West mountain early in the morning with our climbing gear. The ascent will first pass over a wide, snow-covered ridge. After a short dip, the ascent begins over the strong but not particularly steep northern slope of Chulu West. We will follow our climbing guide’s instructions and take brief rests to catch our breath as we ascend. We will use our ice axe, ropes, and crampons to help us climb the more hazardous sections.

Congratulations on reaching the summit and enjoying the most breathtaking view of Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Lamjung Peak, and Gangapurna Peak. Enjoy the moment, snap photos, and use the tip of the peak to make reels.

After a while, we will travel down to High Camp for our delicious meal and a cup of tea or coffee. We may go to Ledar if we are not too exhausted; if we are, we will stay the night at High Camp.

If we start the day from the High Camp, we will descend to Ledar first, after which we will travel to Thorong Phedi by the traditional Annapurna Thorong La Pass trail. We will travel north, over many tiny creeks and navigating the challenging landslide zones. With a tundra-like alpine structure and only a few grasses and lichens growing, the scene will be quite desolate.

As we continue, we will come to a junction where we will turn left and cross the bridge to go to Thorong Phedi. We can spend the night at Phedi if we are tired. We can trek strenuously uphill to High Camp if we are game.

Day 14: Trek to Muktinath Via Thorang-la Pass (5416m) from Thorong Phedi / High Camp Duration 8-9 hours

We have a long walk ahead of us. We might have to get up early and climb a tough hill to get to High Camp if we are starting our day from Thorong Phedi.

The route to the majestic Thorang-la Pass from the High Cap is short and not particularly steep. Climbing uphill gradually for two to three hours will take us to the top of the Pass at 5416 m. The magnificent view of the Annapurna massifs, Gangapurna, Khatung Kang, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Mukut-Himal, and Mustang valley can be seen from the summit.

The Pass summit was decorated with a sizable pile of stone and vibrant prayer flags. There is also a tea restaurant at the top where you may enjoy our morning tea while taking in the breathtaking views.

Now, it’s time to tackle a steep descent to Muktinath, which can put a lot of strain on our thighs for another 3 hours. Before arriving to Muktinath, the trail passes through the village of Chaharu and the remains of a few yak herder settlements.

Detail information about the trip

Trip Information of Chulu West Peak Climbing

The Best Time to Climb Chulu West Peak

The climbing seasons on Chulu West Peak are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). There are greater chances for pleasant, stable weather throughout these months and less likelihood of precipitation. Therefore, now is the ideal time of year to ascend Chulu West.

Winter ascents are still possible with considerable care and preparation, even if the highest slopes are covered in hard ice and the temperature is very low.

Significant midsummer rainfall in the Annapurna region raises the possibility of landslides and hazardous roads. Due to its location in a rain shadow, the Mustang region receives extremely little rain, even during the monsoon. We do not advise climbing the Chulu West in the summer or during the rains.

Distance and Elevation

Our Chulu West Peak climbing tour begins at Syanje, 130 kilometers from Nepal’s capital, at an elevation of 1100 meters. Chulu West, which stands at 6419 meters, is the ultimate objective. Many seasoned climbers who have already ascended the Chulu East claim that the Chulu West is more beautiful than the Eastern one.

Climbing Chulu West Peak typically takes 17 to 18 days, though this can change depending on the route used. At 5595 meters above sea level, High Camp is the highest elevation where we will spend the night.

Walking Maximum and Minimum

Our 17-day Chulu West Peak climbing program consists of 10 days of hiking and 1 day of peak climbing. Over the course of eleven days, we walk an average of fifteen to twenty kilometers per day for six to seven hours.

However, the duration may vary based on our daily schedule due to the variable terrain, climate, and trekker capability. We will hike for at least three to four hours on the seventh day of the trip from Manang to Ledar. A quick hike has been thoughtfully planned to enhance acclimatization before approaching the base camp.

We hike the furthest to reach the summit on the climbing day, of course. It takes nine to ten hours to reach the summit and descend to High Camp.

Difficulty of Chulu West Peak Climbing

The weather and altitude make ascending Chulu West Peak challenging, especially if you decide to do it in the winter, even if it is a moderate, non-technical snow climb with no technical issues. The glacial terrain, snowy trails, and ice slopes make the ascent dangerous. However, if we are appropriately taught, equipped, acclimated, and stay on course, our journey is safe. The PD/3 category includes the conventional routes to Chulu West.

Can a beginner climb Chulu West?

From the standpoint of professional mountaineering, anyone who is physically fit can ascend Chulu West. If you have the determination, lead a healthy lifestyle, and do not have any serious chronic ailments, you can join our expedition. If you are new, make sure you choose fall for a relatively easy walk and more success.

Training and preparation

Starting a jog at the park, at the gym, or on the road is a simple way to get ready to climb Chulu West Peak. It would be ideal to start running for 30 minutes three times a week three months before the climb. Change to 1.5–2 hours of workout, or about 10 km, during the last three weeks.

If you follow this simple exercise regimen, your cardiovascular and respiratory systems will get toned, your leg muscles will get better, and your endurance will quickly rise to a good level.

Alternative ways for climbing Chulu West Peak

You can add the Tilicho Base Camp walk and Tilicho Lake trip to your Chulu West climbing expedition for an extra challenge and adventure. You can go from Manang to Tilicho Lake and base camp for a few days in order to accomplish this. After that, get back to Manang and trek to Ledar in order to attack the Chulu West Peak.

Alternatively, if you are in Jomsom, you can hike the Annapurna circuit trail on your way back after reversing the traditional route and climbing Chulu West Peak.

Climbing Chulu West Peak with Altitude Sickness

On the fifth day of our trip, you will be at an elevation of over 3000 meters, which puts you at risk for altitude sickness. Nonetheless, we have planned our program so that you will spend the night at a high altitude, allowing your body to fully acclimate.

However, take Diamox and let our advisor know if you get headaches, nausea, lightheadedness, or trouble breathing or sleeping. You can go to a lower elevation and delay your program for a day or two. The secret to avoiding altitude sickness is to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and taking breaks between hikes.

Meals, Drinks, and Transportation

On the day of your arrival and departure in Kathmandu, we provide airport pickup and drop-off services. Depending on the size of the group, we take a bus or jeep to Syanje at the beginning of the hiking trip. We will take a short domestic flight to Pokhara as part of our return trip.

In terms of food and beverages, we provide a substantial breakfast each morning while visiting Kathmandu. Everest Summit Treks and Expedition will supply breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the lodge menu system during the hike, as well as tea and fresh fruit following dinner.

The primary dishes are Dal, Vat, and Tarkari; the secondary dishes are porridge, egg, momos, chowmen, Thukpa, and pizza.

Our crew will build up tents during the base camp stay and ascent. Three times a day, they will make hot meals with tea, coffee, and boiling water.

Internet/wifi, device charging, and communication

The Namaste (NTC) and Ncell networks function fairly well for mobile internet and communication throughout the trekking period. There might not be any service during the ascension phase from the base camps.

Nearly all tea rooms and lodges provide WiFi, albeit depending on the amount of users, the service may be poor. In the lodges, you may also charge your gadgets. You may have to pay more money for the service.

Chulu West Peak Climbing Permits

The Chulu West Climbing expedition requires a climbing permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association in addition to a permit from the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. We will be in charge of these permissions, and the service price is part of our program.

Insurance for travel

Every climber should have sufficient travel insurance for the duration of the Chulu West Peak ascent. Accidents, altitude sickness, and weather fluctuations are all made more likely by the high altitude. Climbing insurance for high passes and trekking, along with other high altitude insurance coverage, should be tailored for various mountaineering activities above 6,500 meters. Emergency helicopter evacuations from remote areas, treatment for altitude sickness, injuries, trip cancellation insurance, and insurance against illness, weather cancellations, and natural disasters should all be covered by these policies.

The most popular insurance firms create specialty insurance coverage for climbing and Himalayan hiking. Climbers are encouraged to get insurance before arriving in Nepal to make cross-country travel and expeditions easier.
