Trip Introduction of Everest Three High Passes Trek

When it comes to the dream destination trekking routes, then often Everest Base Camp trek comes into mind of many. But for true adventurers, simply reaching EBC or Kala Patthar may not be enough of a challenge so we brought to you our Everest three high passes trek.

Our Everest three high passes trek is a counterclockwise route that crosses three passes of Kongma La (5535 m), Cho La (5420 m), and Renjo La (5388 m) of Everest along with the challenge of Everest Base Camp (5364 m), Kala Patthar (5644 m) and Gokyo Ri (5457 m). Thus, our Everest three passes trek will be one of the most difficult but the most rewarding, complete, and fulfilling journeys amidst the high Himalayas and rugged terrain. It will be a physical challenge and a test of your will, adaptability, your passion for trekking, and your love for the mountains.

Our 18 days Everest three high passes trek will take you through the traditional Everest Base Camp route where the delightful sightings of Everest (8848 m), Kongde Ri (6187 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Khumbila (5761 m), Taboche (6495 m), Nuptse (7861 m), Ama Dablam (6812 m), Thamserku (6608 m), Kusum Kanguru  (6367 m), Lhotse (8516 m) along with the Sherpa Buddhist culture will fascinate all along. From Dingboche, your route will deviate towards Chhukung from where you will set on to tackle the highest and most fearsome pass among three: the great Kongma La.

Once at the top, you will have beautiful moments with Ama Dablam, Makalu (8485 m), Lhotse, Pumori (7165 m), Nuptse, Gaurishankar (7134 m) and Everest. The next phase of our Everest three high passes trek will then lead you toward the iconic Everest Base Camp and then to Kala Patthar black ridge.

Now, you will advance towards the surreal and majestic land of Gokyo Valley and its icy clear blue lakes by crossing the second pass of Cho La. Here, you will also walk over by the longest and most beautiful glacier in Nepal the Ngozumpa with the massive Cho Oyu in front. Once you conquer the Gokyo Ri ridge here, you will then cross the easiest pass of the Everest three high passes trek, the Renjo La before making your return along the circular trail to Lukla and then to Kathmandu.

Overall, our Everest three high passes trek, with its combination of challenges and breathtaking beauty, is a testament to the power of nature and the human spirit. This route is not for those looking for ease but for enthusiasts who love to challenge themselves and find the true meaning of trekking.

Welcome to a real highland adventure where you will feel Everest the hard way.

Detail Itinerary of Everest Three High Passes Trek - 18 Days

Day 1: Reception at TIA, Kathmandu (1324m) and Hotel Transfer

Greetings from the legendary capital of Nepal, Kathmandu! After you land at TIA and exit its gate after completing the necessary customs and visa formalities, you will see our Everest Summit treks correspondent waiting for you at the gate. He will load your luggage on our private transport and take you to your appointed hotel.

Please get some rest and then you can go out to feel the great charm of the city. In the evening, once every one of our Everest three high passes trek is here, our guide will give you all the essential information about the program.

Then you can head to the Thamel market with our guide to pick up any missing gear you may need. Please get to bed early since we may have to leave for Ramechhap around midnight for the early flight to Lukla.

NB

Please note that in case of fog, bad weather, and heavily congested TIA, there will be no flights from Kathmandu to Lukla. Instead, you will have to ride to Ramechhap for about 4 to 5 hours so the journey may start at midnight.

On the way back, you may again have to fly to Ramechhap and then back to Kathmandu. If direct flights are available, we will take the same. We request all our guests to get to Kathmandu as early as they can.

From Tengboche, the forest path goes down to the river and passes through the narrow gorge. Then we will one more time walk over the suspension bridge to reach Debuche. We will now gradually rise above the tree line towards Pangboche. Here, we have two trails: the left trail will lead us towards Upper Pangboche and the right one towards Lower One.

Walking on the right one, we will walk over a few more small hanging bridges and then a fairly gentle upstream track will lead us to Dingboche. The incomparable Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Lhotse, Nuptse, Lobuche Peak, Pumori, and many other monsters will rightfully make us feel in the middle of the Himalayas.

Day 7: Trek up to the village of Chhukung (4,730 m)

We will have a short acclimating walk towards Chhukung in the Imja Valley today. The route to the village runs along the Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse walls.

A bit later, the terrain suddenly transforms and becomes steeper, and tougher, with lots of rocks and icy water streams. With careful stepping, we will overcome this section and reach the village enclosed by the beautiful ice walls of Lhotse, Numbur, Tawache, Cholatse, Karyolung, Kongde Ri, and Makalu. Those who feel enthusiastic can also choose to climb 5546 m Chhukung Ri Ridge but it is better that we rest as we will be tackling the first Everest pass the next day.

Day 8: Trek up to the village of Lobuche (4925 m) crossing over Kongma La Pass (5,535 m)

We will get ready early in the dark and pack our lunch, then we will set on north towards the Nuptse Glacier. Once we pass through Bibre, we will step into the Nyiang Valley flanked by Pokalde on one side and Chhukung Ri on the other. Then, we will take the west trail where we will continue for about 3 to 4 hours until we meet a bunch of tiny mountain lakes. Here we are, nestled between the Kongma Tse and Pokalde on top of the high Everest Pass.

From the top of the pass, we will have a beautiful view of the Nuptse, the north face of the Ama Dablam and Lobuche Peak along with Gauri Shankar, Everest, Pumori, Makalu, and Lhotse. Now, we will have to descend which will be steep and difficult, and when we are back down, we will also have to cross the Khumbu glacier on a path that winds up and down through the ice and scree fields before we reach the evening tea house of Lobuche.

Day 9: Trek up to the village of Gorakshep (5140 m) to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), and back down to Gorakshep

From Lobuche, we will start to trudge over scree slopes, and then walk along the side arm of the Khumbu Glacier to reach the sandbank of Gorakshep through the Lobuche Pass. Kala Patthar can be easily and clearly seen from here. We will take a few moments to eat and dispose of our bags. Then we will make the trek back and forth to Everest Base Camp.

We will traverse for 2 to 3 hours over the glacier to the magnificent Khumbu icefall and the camp itself. The summit of Mount Everest cannot be seen from the base camp, but the formations of the Lhotse, Khumbu Glacier, Pumori, Khumbutse, and Nuptse are particularly impressive. Today we will spend the night in Gorakshep, at the foot of the Kala Patthar.

Day 10: Climb the summit of Kala Patthar (5,644 m) and trek down to the village of Dzong La (4830 m)

We will get up very early to visit the Kala Patthar, the maximum elevation of our 18 days Everest three high passes trek. We will cross the Khumbu Glacier and reach the plateau where the Helicopter frequently lands with travelers to stop by. From here, we will tackle the 1.5 to 2 hours of steep climbing, then the top is reached. The first thing our eye will be drawn to will be Mount Everest followed by the demanding attention of Pumori, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Lingtren, Lhotse, Changtse, Lobuche, and Khumbutse.

Then, we will head back down to Gorakshep and prepare to trek down towards Dzong La. Until past Lobuche, we will walk back on the main path. Then we will cross the Chola Lake and climb on a narrow mountain path along the mountainside into the summer settlement Dzongla.

Day 11: Trek up to the Gokyo Lake (4790 m) via Dragnak after crossing Cho La Pass (5,420 m)

From Dzongla, we will walk down a short distance to the bottom of the valley. We will then trek to the base of the pass in about 1.5 hours. Now a steep section over rock slabs starts after which we will step onto the ice and glacier. At this point, we may seek the help of fixed ropes and tackle the small ice plain after which we will be at the top of the pass formed by a flat glacier with no crevasses.

We can see the Rolwaling Himal clearly from here which will be a new panorama for us. As for the descent, we will have to pay attention to a steep start assisted by the attached ropes. Thangnak or Dragnag will be shortly reached where we will take a very worthy break for lunch.

Then, we will prepare to climb the scree ridge and cross the Ngozumpa glacier, the longest one in Nepal which will take about 2 to 2.5 hours. Gokyo Lake is almost directly opposite on the west side of this glacier. We will then walk back up the moraine of this glacier and then the first blue lake of Longponga will be before us. Next, we will resume walking along the dirt-rugged path till we arrive at the next blue lake of Gokyo- the Taujung. Not afar is the third and the biggest Gokyo Lake named Dudh Pokhari or Gokyo Cho. Here, we can find a number of decent lodges to relax and enjoy the surrounding white peaks of Cho Oyu and Kangtega.

Day 12: Climb to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,457 m) and trek back down to Gokyo

We have a spectacular day today when we will walk over the glacier to reach the summit of Gokyo Ri. Like Kala Patthar, the climb will be pretty non-technical and simple, plus we will also come across several other higher mountain lakes of Gokyo.

Once at the top, we will have a unique view of the broad ice wall of Cho Oyu in the north and of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu in the east. We will now descend back to Gokyo and get some decent rest before tackling the next pass of Everest tomorrow

Day 13: Trek down to the village of Lungden (4370 m) after crossing Renjo La Pass (5,388 m)

Today, we will be crossing the final pass of our Everest three high passes trek which is the easiest among the three. The climb to the pass itself is very manageable but the downhill trip from the pass will be quite long and steep.

However, there are stairs to help us out with the descent. From Goko, we will circle the Gokyo Ri and head on the climbing trail to the Pass. The continuous 3 to 4 hours of relentless climbing will finally take us to the base from where we will tackle a steep zigzag path to the top. The ordeal of our journey will be rewarded with the close views of Everest, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. The downhill journey from the pass will lead us into the Bhote Koshi Valley into the village of Lungden.

Trip Info

Best Time and Season for the Everest Three Passes Trek

The two most favorable seasons for any high trekking in Nepal fall in the months of fall/autumn and spring. The driest trail possible, the track devoid of any snow and ice, the clearest possible weather, and the magnanimous views of the high Himalayas are the conditions that any hiker seeks and these two seasons offer exactly the same. The two seasons paint the entire Khumbu region in an amazing palette of colors. Particularly during the autumn time starting from the middle days of September and lasting till the stretch of November presents the cooler days, and the snowless trail to the three high Everest passes making them easier to navigate.

On the other hand, the spring season beginning from the early days of March and stretching till the end of May gives the Khumbu landscape a fresh start with rhododendrons and wildflowers decorating the trails. There can be snow in early March but as the season advances, the track becomes clear.

The winter approaches Khumbu in early December till the end days of February. At this time, the coldest heat, and wind will make the trekking demanding while the track to the three Passes will be more in deep snow turning it to be more treacherous even for the experienced ones. The summer comes with monsoon rain from July till the end of August which cuts off the trails to most of the Villages in Khumbu. So it is best to avoid this season completely for the Everest three high passes trek.

18 days Everest three high passes trek: Challenges and Difficulty

Our 18 days Everest three high passes trek is known to be the most challenging, demanding, and toughest adventure in the Khumbu region. Right from the beginning, you will face the strenuous task of traversing the winding, icy, snowy, and rocky trails. Sometimes, they can be poorly marked often leading to confusion. Secondly, the significant challenge is the high elevation where most of our hiking and night stays will take place above the 5000 m mark where most of the hikers truly feel the altitude.

Most of all, there are three high Everest passes that you have to conquer all of them exceeding the 5000 m elevation. Among them, the most daunting one is the Kongma La Pass because of its very sharp ascent and descent over the loose rocks and huge boulders. Additionally, there are treks involved to Everest Base Camp and the two high ridges of Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri. Over 18 days, we will cover approximately 166 kilometers, with some days requiring up to 9 hours of walking.

Thus, the Everest three passes trek is classified as the category 5 difficulty (non-technical), which is physically strenuous needing all the participants to be in exceptional health and fitness.

Can a new hiker join in our Everest three high passes trek?

You have already come to know about the toughness and the challenges of the Everest three high passes trek, and the difficulties that you will have to overcome. However, we like to point out that this Category 5 trek can be reduced to Category 4 by simply skipping the climb to Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri ridges so you won’t have to put in the extra effort. Yes, there is no way you can skip the walking part over the arduous terrain and you will have to deal with the steep climbs followed by sharp descents so our 18 days Everest three high passes trek will surely test you, your physical capabilities, and your mental resilience.

However, if you are up for all the challenges we have mentioned and have very good health, then sure, you can take part in our Everest three passes trek even if you are just beginning your adventure in Nepal. We do however encourage you to prepare through rigorous training or significant hiking adventures in your area. You may also consider completing the Gokyo Lake trek or the Everest Base Camp trek first so you will have firsthand experience in crossing the Cho La Pass or climbing Kala Patthar.

If you have musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, or respiratory conditions, we strongly advise you to reconsider participating in this trip. Please talk with your doctor about your intention to join and only if you receive their approval, you should proceed to our Everest three high passes trek.

Altitude Sickness, Treatment, and Prevention with Acclimatization

Altitude sickness better known as AMS or Acute Mountain Sickness will be your biggest challenge during your Everest three high passes trek. Most of the hikers often when they get closer to Kongma La Pass suffer from severe headaches, vertigo, exhaustion, dizziness, and insomnia which are the first signs of the condition. As soon as these signs begin to appear, you must quickly descend to adapt and should take the whole day to rest. Doing so, you may miss the chance to see the incredible mountains but risking your life just to see the scenery is not worth doing.

It will also help if you take Diamox but notify our guide before doing so as he will take the necessary measures after evaluating your condition. To make this journey as much easier as we can, we have integrated acclimating days at Namche, Dingboche, and Gokyo Villages to prepare well for the higher passes. We have also minimized your hiking time after crossing the second pass of Cho La. The best possible way to remain fit during the journey will be staying hydrated, proceeding at a slower pace taking your time and not rushing with the climbs or the descents.

Necessary Training and Preparation for the Everest three high passes trek

The Everest three high passes trek should not be mistaken for only a high-altitude adventure but it is also a battle with altitude and harsh weather. So those who want to participate in our Everest three passes trek should be well-prepared in terms of terrain knowledge and physical strength. This route requires endurance and experience. You have to walk 166 km continuously with a backpack weighing from 15 to 20 kg. Additionally, health will also be the deciding factor, because not only is the journey long but it is also a challenge of constant altitude change.

Thus, to maximize your readiness for the journey, begin your training at home no less than three months before your adventure. You should concentrate on aerobic exercises that can boost your endurance level such as walking, running, and cycling. Likewise, stair climbing, weight lifting, or exercising on stepmills, elliptical trainers, or incline treadmills will be excellent workouts for you for the long day hikes on the trip.

Alternate way for the Everest three passes trek

The route for our Everest Three Passes trek will move in a counterclockwise direction which is more advisable for those who are looking for a simpler approach as possible towards the Everest Three Passes. There is also another route available which advances in a clockwise way. This route is more favorable for those who are better experienced and ready for the growing challenge on the way. In addition, there will be fewer acclimatization days on this route.

This route will first take you towards Renjo La Pass which is regarded as the easiest one among the three. Then, you will proceed to Gokyo and overcome the most common Cho La Pass. The onward path will then direct you towards Everest base Camp after which you will conquer the fearsome Kongma La and then head back to Namche.

Sleeping and Eating

During our 18 days on Everest three high passes trek, you will get to stay for two nights in the friendly three-star hotel of the capital such as Hotel Manang or Hotel Thamel Park. You will have a room with two single beds and an attached bathroom with 24-hour hot water and WiFi. When walking, the so-called trekker’s tea house or lodge will offer you warm nights. The setting will be simpler with beds, mattresses, blankets, and pillows in the common bathroom in or outside the tea house. We also have upgrade options that you can use if you want your nights to be more relaxed and private.

As for meal options, in Kathmandu, breakfast will be at your overnight hotel every morning, and lunches and dinners will have to self catered. When walking, breakfasts, dinners, and lunches will be available to you at the tea houses. From Nepali to international, you can try out any dishes up to Namche. Later on, the menu may be limited to momos, dal vat, noodles, fried rice, pancakes, eggs, and potatoes.

Transportation

The transportation for all arrivals and departures between TIA and your hotel will be executed in a private means such as a van, jeep, bus, or car. We will also manage the logistics regarding your flights to or from Lukla. If there is a reroute to Ramechhap, a private means will be utilized for your transfer.

Imperative Permits for the Everest three high passes trek

For our Everest three passes trek, two very crucial permits are important which are the USD 20 per hiker municipality permit for the Khumbu and the USD 30 per hiker permit for the access to the National Park land of Sagarmatha. The Khumbu municipal permit has removed the necessity for the TIMS permit. Both permits can be procured in Lukla or Monjo, and the park permit is also accessible at the tourist service center in Kathmandu.

Our guide will oversee all the process and the fee has already been included in the overall trip cost.

Travel Insurance

You have to understand that a lot of things can happen suddenly and unexpectedly in our Everest three high passes trek such as fractures, dislocations, bruises, sprains, and other injuries to the musculoskeletal system, as well as altitude sickness which can be catastrophic without insurance. Travel insurance is important here not only because the insurance company will pay for the treatment, but first of all because of the possibility of organizing transportation to the hospital.

For this, you may have to arrange a helicopter, and it is not so easy to do it on your own, and sometimes (most often due to the cost) it is completely impossible. This also includes the possibility of organizing search and investigation activities. So make sure you have travel insurance with you which remains valid to an altitude of more than 5500 m. Also make sure it also has bonuses of simple travel insurance such as protection against delayed or extended trips, extra stays, thefts, and possible damage to our bags.
