Trip Introduction of Mera Peak Climbing 15 Days

If we have to describe our Mera Peak climbing expedition in one sentence, it will probably be ‘the most beautiful adventure on the planet’. And why not? After all, the Mera Peak defends itself like no other peak crowned as the highly rewarded and the tallest trekking summit of the planet.

With incredible contrasts of nature, the impressive Hinku Nup and Mera Glaciers, and the towering Zwatra La and Mera La Passes make our 15 days Mera Peak climbing journey out of the ordinary.

However, the unique rich wealthy spectacle of six, seven, and eight-thousand-meter peaks, placed next to each other, in the form of a precious necklace make the Mera Peak Climbing expedition more exceptional.

Mera Peak has been standing tall, eternally, alongside its three counterparts, in the Makalu Barun National Park next to the southeastern Sagarmatha, right by the Tibetan border.

The trio includes Mera South at 6,065 m, Mera Central at 6,461 m, and Mera North at 6,476 m. At the moment, the north and south brothers of Mera are quite off-limits due to tricky terrain and technical issues.

That’s why our target will be the Mera Central first summited by Col Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing on May 20th of 1953. Mera Central is the simple peak for first-time climbers that also gives its adventurers the sensational visuals of five of the highest snowy pyramids of the world: Everest (8848 m), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m), and Cho Oyu (8,188 m).

In addition, you will have an extra adventure with a slight fitness challenge in our Mera Peak climbing adventure which is the crossing of the Zwatra La Pass (4600 m) and Mera La Pass (5245 m).

Your Mera Peak climbing 15 days journey will begin with a flight to Lukla, where your trekking journey towards the uniquely shaped Sherpa village of Chhutang will commence.

The imposing Zwatra La Pass will then guide you inside the Hinku Valley and direct you to Khare all the while experiencing the rich biodiversity of the Makalu Barun National Park, as well as the distinctive culture of the local Sherpa people, including their monasteries, stupas, and Mani mounds.

We promise that your trekking experience will be anything but monotonous. Next, our Mera Peak climbing itinerary will ascend 5700 m High Camp via Mera La Pass from where you will push to the peak the next day.

After successfully achieving your objective, you will circle back to Kathmandu. Attemptable for any fit and healthy trekkers, the Mera Peak climbing can be endeavored in the delightful period of spring and fall.

Finally, we also like to add that during the Mera Peak Climbing journey, you will be accompanied by our extremely dedicated support team who will give you a sense of security and take care of a good atmosphere during the trip.

Welcome to beautiful Mera, still unspoiled by mass tourism

Detail Itinerary of Mera Peak Climbing 15 Days - 15 Days

Day 1: Landing at Kathmandu Airport [4411 ft/1345 m] & hotel transport.

Namaste and welcome! After waiting for so long, finally, we are able to greet you. One of the friendly faces of our Everest Summit Treks correspondent will politely receive you and take you to your approved lodging.

Enjoy a moment of relaxation and then you can venture out to discover the chaotic charm of Kathmandu. Once all our daring adventurers arrive, our tour guide will greet all and explain about our Mera Peak climbing 15 days schedule. Then, you can head out to pick up any gear you may need, of course, our guide will be with you to assist. Later, explore the diverse tasty Nepali cuisine and end your evening early for we have an early Lukla flight tomorrow morning.

NB

Please note that the very busy fall and spring trekking and climbing season see a lot of traffic at TIA, so the flight between Kathmandu and Lukla often gets switched to the Manthali/Ramechhap Airport.

If this happens, we will set up private transport to Manthali, which may leave around midnight and take roughly four hours. That’s why we suggest all our climbers heading for our Mera Peak Climbing expedition arrive in Kathmandu as early as possible in the morning.

Shortly, we will be walking through the terraced fields and huts of the village of Chhutang- our first overnight village in the midst of the snowy giants and Kalo Himal ridge.

Lhotse, Mera, Makalu, and Everest are some of the highlights of the Pass. Normally, climbers head about 100 meters down the pass to set up the base camp for Mera Peak, but we will continue on to High Camp.It is positioned on the northern side of the Mera so it will be the perfect spot to attack the summit the next day. The trail will be quite easy with no technical complications however there will be few crevasses and sharp inclination towards the last part.

From the High Camp, we can admire the amazing profiles of Lhotse, Mera, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Makalu, Baruntse, Chamlang, and Everest. It is now time to once again get on with our training and practice session with our climbing guide

Day 9: Push the summit of Mera Peak [6461 m/21192 ft] and hike down to Khare Village

Here we are, the main day of our Mera Peak climbing expedition is upon us. We will commence very early probably around 3 AM with our headlamps showing us the way.

The overall climbing section is relatively easy and simple but it mostly depends on the weather too. First, we will begin on a steep incline which will become increasingly challenging as we near the summit. Soon, we can see our main purpose, the Mera Summit.

There will be one last demanding stretch of 50 steep meters before we reach the summit, where we may need to utilize the installed railings. Our guide will conduct a safety check on the railings and will offer advice on gear usage in these steeper areas before we proceed. Finally, we are at the top, and we are really at the top of the world. Take in the stunning contour of the magical and heroic Kanchenjunga (8586 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Makalu (8463 m), Cho Oyu (8201 m), Everest (8848 m), Nuptse (7855 m), Chamlang (7319 m), and Lobuche (6145 m).

After the grandest moment, we will now head back down to the High Camp, enjoy a warm meal, pack up our tents, and make our way down to Khare via the Mera La pass.

Essential Information

Perfect Time for the Mera Peak climbing 15 days Expedition

For anyone, keen on joining our Mera Peak climbing adventure, the fall/autumn period advancing between mid-September through the end of November will be the perfect time to go. The clearest and most enduring weather, the excellent Himalayan panorama, and the most pleasant heat make this season exceptionally preferable for the Mera Peak climbing journey.

In Kathmandu, the heat is extremely agreeable lingering between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. As you go up, it will however drop to around 0 degrees, with nights getting as cold as -6 degrees. At Mera La, High Camp, and the summit, it can even go down to -15 degrees at night. If you ask for the next best time, then we would suggest the spring weather occurring between March through the end of May. Early March can still be cold and you may also find snow at the  Zwatra la and Mera La Passes.

But as the season progresses, the heat will rise bringing the explosion of colorful flowers, especially the national rhododendron, which adds to the trail’s charm. Winter climbing between December through February is more suitable for seasoned climbers. If you are a beginner, it may not be the best idea for you because of the large pile of snow and increased technicality. As for the summer/monsoon time stretching between June to early September, most of the trails are usually cut off due to landslides and floods. So the monsoon climb will not be a good idea for both new and experienced climbers.

Mera Peak climbing: Challenges and Level of Difficulty

The classification of Mera Peak climbing is regarded as PD (Peu Difficile), which denotes the journey and the summit itself is moderately tough and non-technical.You don’t need any climbing experience to reach the Mera summit and the entire expedition is also pretty simple. There are no complicated steps involved making it a perfect pick for those who want to conquer their first Himalaya in Nepal.

In fact, this summit is the perfect training ground for preparing for more serious climbs in the future, such as Ama Dablam, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga, or even Everest. In addition, our Mera Peak climbing 15 days journey has also been carefully developed taking into account the acclimatization of every climber. However, there will be 5 to 7 hours of everyday journey on the frequently changing terrain and climate. You will also have to face the challenge of two enormous Nepal mountain passes of Zwatra La and Mera La.And, during the last 50 m section on the way to the summit, the sharp inclination, and crevasses will test your determination and strength. Similarly, the constantly increasing high elevation will be another added challenge.

Thus, we want from you a lot of patience, determination, strong motivation and resilience, and good fitness for this journey.

Can a new climber summit the Mera Peak?

Because of the demand for only basic mountaineering abilities, the Mera summit has become a very sought-after peak for thrill seekers who are eager to dive deep into the breathtaking high-altitude landscapes of the Himalayas in Nepal.Although, no advanced high-skill or technical capabilities are needed, but you must be comfortable enough to navigate the slopes with inclines reaching 40° with or without the support of ropes.

You should also be prepared and strong enough to deal with the long Travel Time of walking that can last 10 hours on the final push to the summit. Thus, if you have adequate physical well-being, agility, and fundamental climbing experience or rock climbing ability, then you can join our 15 days Mera Peak climbing adventure even if you are just beginning your climbing adventure.

For the basic skills we have mentioned about, you don’t have to stress as our experienced skilled Sherpa climbing guide will conduct a training session when you are at Khare and High Camp. If needed, he may also utilize ropes and perform a thorough check of the pre-installed railings before you use them.He will keep a careful eye on each one of you in the group and guide you in the tricky sections of the summit. However, we do not recommend the individuals with any medical conditions (heart, lungs, and kidneys) to take part in our Mera Peak climbing 15 days journey as the condition could complicate a lengthy stay at high altitudes.

Risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) or Altitude Sickness and Placement of Acclimatization

While it is true that Mera Peak Climbing is doable for every healthy individual, however, it would be advantageous if you have some level of climbing knowledge and usage of some simple technical gear such as ice axes and ropes. But, you can learn these during the training sessions we provide on the trip. So the entire journey will be quite easy for you, still, you should always take any Himalayan peak seriously after all they are the giant Himalayas where uncertainty reigns supreme.

In addition, you will start to experience the high altitudes of the overnight villages right from day 3 of our 15 days Mera Peak climbing travel program when you will stay above 4000 m elevation. The elevation then will progressively increase as you move up taking you over the Zwatra La and Mera La and then to High Camp ultimately leading you to 6461 m of Mera summit.Such altitude can bring on symptoms like vertigo, swollen hands, and feet, and trouble in sleeping, breathing, and eating. All these manifestations are related to AMS which can hinder your succession to the summit. That’s why, our Everest Summit treks team has created a well-thought-out itinerary that limits your walking hours and includes a rest day at Khare as you get closer to the summit. For the uninterrupted journey to the summit, you must focus on keeping yourself well-hydrated, steady, and slow pace, staying warm, and having proper adequate rest while following the correct acclimatization schedule.

To prevent and aid in getting used to the elevation, you can begin taking Diamox when you are already in Kathmandu, but remember, you should not have contraindications. We have also set aside the reserve day for the summit attempt to ensure you have enough time.

Training and Necessary preparation

If you want to reach the summit of Mera Peak, you really need to get serious about your fitness and training, especially in hilly areas. It will be best if you strength and endurance workouts for at least four weeks before you set off for our Mera Peak climbing expedition. When hiking, although, all your luggage will be transported by porters, but you will need to carry your backpack with essentials and get on with long hours of hiking Travel Time.So to best prepare for such a journey, we suggest you practice for at least thirty minutes a day with a lighter load on your back. At home or on your own, you can focus on stair climbing, jump rope, cycling, running, and swimming.

If you choose to work out in the gym, then the treadmill will be a fantastic way to improve your cardio and don’t skip leg, back, and core workouts as well.Along with physical prep, your mental readiness is also equally important so if possible, talk to climbers who have already climbed and conquered any peak in Nepal or elsewhere. You should also check out documentaries about Mera Peak, its weather, and terrain, and practice to keep calm when things suddenly start to get tough.

Diverse Route to Mera Peak climbing

For Mera Peak climbing, you have two main routes to choose from. One is our route which is very simple, easy, efficient, and devoid of technical complexities with the chance for progressive acclimatization. The second option is also favorable for new climbers but it will be the longer route that traverses the distinct settlements of Paiya, Pangkongma, Ramailo Danda, and Chhatra Khola from Lukla finally meeting the trail to Kothe.

This journey is certainly one of the unique ones offering you the enchanting views of Tang Ragi Tu, Khatang, and Kongde Ri but there will be more walking, and a very slow acclimatization process. However, you will get to know some of the most stunning off-the-beaten-path areas of Nepal. Now, if you are a more challenge-loving person and have already gained a significant amount of experience and skill, then you can also think of combining the Island and Lobuche Peaks ascension on your  Mera Peak climbing 15 days itinerary.Or, you can also add the Mingbo La Pass trek or the Amphu Lapcha Pass trek to make your Mera Peak climbing journey more distinguishable. However, the route will require an additional permit for the National Park of Sagarmatha.

The route is also less touristy so you will have to be ready to camp at night on most parts of the hiking trail.

Accommodation and Dining options

We want to make your 15 days Mera Peak climbing adventure loaded with fun and excitement. That’s why, to free you from all the stress and hassle, we will look after all your logistics from the accommodation and food to the acquisition of mandatory permits. For two nights in Kathmandu, you will be in a shared standard hotel room of a three-star hotel with bed and breakfast service every morning. For dinner and lunch, you can explore on your own because there are unlimited food choices in the capital.

When walking through the hilly villages, you will stay in quaint little lodges or mountain shelters which are quite basic, usually with two or three single beds in a room. There will be little furnishings and you may have to share the latrine with other guests of the lodge. Throughout the trek and climbing, you will get three meals a day (dinner, lunch, and breakfast) at the host shelter.Up to Lukla, you can choose from local Sherpa cuisine or Western dishes like pizza, pie, pasta, and burgers. As you move higher, the menu will focus on Dal Vat Tarkari with an unlimited helping of Dal and Vat (lentil and rice). There will also be a few other options of bread, momo, thukpa, and noodles. At the High Camp. You will have to share a tent with another climber. You will have individual tents for latrines, sleeping, and dining. Our kitchen crew will cook a fresh nourishing meal three times a day for you.

Transportation

Our transportation service during the Mera Peak climbing 15 days journey includes all your international and national airport transfers in and out via private tourist transport.Likewise, we will also tend to your domestic flights between Kathmandu and Lukla along with the provision of upgrade options with charter heli flights at added cost.If the flight is switched to Ramechhap, we will organize private transport to ensure your trip between Kathmandu and Ramechhap is easy.

Essential Permits for the 15 days Mera Peak Climbing Expedition

For the Mera Peak climbing adventure, we will need to get two park permits: one for the Sagarmatha and another for Makalu Barun. Both are available at the park counter of the Tourism Board Office of Kathmandu or at the entrance gate of the Park at 3000 Nepali Rupees per hiker.Another obligatory permit is the climbing permit necessary to summit the Mera Peak. The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) issues this permit at USD 250 per climber in spring, USD 125 per climber in autumn, and USD 70 per climber in winter and summer. We will tend to all the permit applications and fees for your convenience.

Travel Insurance

We want to inform you that travel insurance for our Mera Peak Climbing journey is not only vital but also absolutely necessary otherwise the NMA will not allow you to conquer the summit of Mera.Your insurance plan must remain valid for the Travel Time of the whole trip which means for 15 days at least. Please make sure that your insurance plan covers special mountain activities like climbing and hiking to higher altitudes where the usage of some technical tools like ice axes, ropes, and crampons are needed.

Most of the insurance plans only give you the financial support up to the elevation of 3500 m so ensure when getting the policy that it also includes the coverage for up to 6500 m.The proper insurance plan should always provide you financial safety net for the search, rescue, and evacuation or transport by helicopter, along with medical costs, transfers, flight delays or cancellations, and theft or baggage damage or loss.
